It seems the Licensing Committee in Birmingham has decided that the city doesn't need any more sexual entertainment venues. They have imposed a cap of 8 lap dancing and/or strip clubs in Birmingham City Centre and said they won't allow any more to open within the city centre ring road. That's the current number
With that number we believe Birmingham has the most lap dancing clubs of any city in the UK outside of London. Previously there were 12 active clubs licences in the city, although not all of the clubs were actually trading at the same time.
The council's licensing committee decided four years ago not to set a limit on the number of sexual entertainment venues in the city, which include strip clubs and lap dancing clubs. However it seems opinions have changed and they have decided that 8 seems the number to stop at! Fears are that any more strip clubs, particularly in the Broad Street and pub and clubs areas, will give the city a 'sleazy' reputation.
The general public, when consulted, demonstrate a majority supporting a total ban on strip clubs in the city, but the adult industry claims that 'gentlemen's clubs' are a key part of Birmingham's economy. With so many conferences and business events taking place in the city, that's probably very true.
